Your imaginations about the future may be as determining of your subjectivity as your imaginations about the past. Psychoanalysis destabilizes our confidence in the linear logic of temporality. Psychoanalysis is not a science of cause and effect but paradoxically shows that later events in one’s life can reconstruct earlier events (a concept knows as deferred action or après coup in Freud’s writings). The past, the present and the future are temporal categories that falter in psychoanalysis as “pluritemporalities” come to the fore. Psychoanalysis is not a developmental psychology which is the purview of psychotherapy. Psychoanalysis undermines the normalizing tendency of developmental psychology and directs our attention instead to “developments” that take place in le temps éclat (André Green’s Freudian concept of “shattered time”).
